HSTARC2: Reaction Blog (Romanesque Architecture)

At first thought, I was really confused on what's the difference about Roman Era and the Romanesque Era. But then I thought, it was like Greek to Roman and Roman to Romanesque. It's just like a series of evolution from one architectural era to another. From the characteristics of the Greek era that was adopted by the Roman, then to the Roman era, adopted a lot of characteristics by the Romanesque, most specifically the arches and vaults.

While I was listening to the video that was presented at the end of the reporting. I find Romanesque architects smart because they were able to find an answer on how to fix the outer wall because of the arch that gives force on it, so they added buttresses to support and absorb the force coming from the arch. The only problem was they weren't able to put windows on the lower part of the walls because it has too massive thick walls, so all windows was placed on the top, near at the roof. Another problem was there were only small amount of sun that's going inside the structure.

I also find them very religious for even their buildings was formed in a shape of a cross. I find them very symbolic in their works. I'm also impressed with their use of stained glass, it really compliments all the classical design of the Romanesque Era. Their use of ornaments which just adds detail to their buildings. Ornaments of God or saints. I was also impressed on how they used different kinds of columns, and the way they arranged it with pattern. I don't know, maybe even on those columns hides a different symbolism to their beliefs.

Personally, I'm not a fan of Romanesque Architecture, because I find it really creepy, and very heavenly. Heavenly I mean, their interiors looks so holy. Most often quiet, most often used at cathedrals, church, and other religious stuffs.

Like in Aesteta class, when I see a Romanesque structure, it quickly reminds me of Christians and their vows to their religion. It's like a sacred place that you should respect.
